Pelvic Floor Health Meets Pilates: A Workshop at Buckingham Pilates in Elmhurst

One of my favorite parts of owning The Healthy Pelvis is the opportunity to collaborate with other local wellness professionals who are passionate about helping people move and feel better.

This workshop was hosted in partnership with Barb Kahovec of  BK Wellness, whose work combines Pilates, yoga, mindfulness, and movement education to help clients improve strength, mobility, and body awareness.

The connection between Pilates and pelvic floor physical therapy is a natural one. Both emphasize breathing, alignment, movement quality, and core coordination rather than simply focusing on strength alone.

Workshops like this help create conversations around symptoms that many women quietly experience but rarely discuss.

The more we normalize these conversations, the easier it becomes for women to seek help, ask questions, and get answers.

A huge thank you to Barb and the entire group for creating such a welcoming and supportive environment for learning and movement. I loved the opportunity to connect with women in our community and share practical tools they can begin using right away.

Exercises We Practiced

During our session at Buckingham Pilates, participants worked through several gentle exercises and movement strategies designed to improve awareness and coordination of the pelvic floor and core system.

These included:

  • Diaphragmatic breathing

  • Pelvic floor relaxation techniques

  • Core and deep abdominal activation

  • Pressure management strategies

  • Coordinating breathing with movement

  • Positioning and posture modifications

One of the biggest takeaways from the evening was that pelvic floor health is about much more than doing Kegel exercises.

In fact, many individuals with pelvic floor symptoms benefit just as much from learning how to relax and lengthen these muscles as they do from strengthening them.
