Private In-Home Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy in Oak Brook, IL: What to Expect
Pelvic floor concerns are incredibly common, but they can still feel difficult—or even embarrassing—to talk about.
Many of the people I work with have spent months or years wondering whether their symptoms are “normal.” They may be leaking urine when they cough or exercise, feeling pelvic pressure, struggling with constipation, experiencing pain with intimacy, or having difficulty recovering after pregnancy or prostate surgery.
Often, they simply don’t know that pelvic floor physical therapy may be able to help.
At The Healthy Pelvis, I provide private, one-on-one pelvic floor physical therapy in the comfort of your home throughout Oak Brook and the surrounding western suburbs. My goal is to make specialized pelvic health care feel comfortable, convenient and personal from the very beginning.
Why People Often Wait to Get Pelvic Floor Help
Pelvic floor symptoms aren’t always easy to bring up—even with a healthcare provider.
You may feel embarrassed discussing bladder leakage, bowel concerns, pelvic pain or changes in sexual function. You may have been told that your symptoms are simply part of getting older, having children or undergoing surgery.
You may also be unsure what pelvic floor physical therapy actually involves.
I understand how personal these concerns can feel. That is why I take time to listen, explain what may be contributing to your symptoms and answer your questions before moving forward with any part of treatment.
You should never feel rushed, judged or uncomfortable during pelvic floor therapy.
What Can Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Help With?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that supports bladder, bowel, sexual and core function. These muscles need to be able to contract, relax and coordinate with your breathing and abdominal muscles.
When that coordination is disrupted, symptoms may develop.
Pelvic floor physical therapy may help with:
Bladder leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise
Urinary urgency or frequent trips to the bathroom
Pelvic pressure or heaviness
Pelvic organ prolapse symptoms
Constipation or difficulty emptying the bowels
Pelvic, tailbone, hip or lower-back pain
Pain with intimacy
Pregnancy-related discomfort
Postpartum recovery
Diastasis recti and core weakness
Men’s pelvic pain or urinary symptoms
Bladder leakage following prostate surgery
Treatment is never based on symptoms alone. Your plan should reflect your body, your lifestyle and what you want to be able to do comfortably again.
Why Choose In-Home Pelvic Floor Therapy in Oak Brook?
Life is already busy. Adding another appointment, commute and waiting room can make it even harder to prioritize your health.
With in-home pelvic floor physical therapy, I come directly to you in Oak Brook. You receive dedicated, one-on-one care in a familiar and private environment.
This can be especially helpful for:
New parents who don’t want to arrange childcare
Busy professionals trying to fit care into a demanding schedule
People experiencing pain, urgency or mobility challenges
Patients who value privacy
Anyone who feels more comfortable discussing personal symptoms at home
In-home care also allows us to make your treatment practical. We can discuss the activities, movements and everyday routines that are actually affecting your symptoms—not just exercises performed in a clinic.
What Happens During Your First Appointment?
Your first visit begins with a conversation.
We will discuss your symptoms, medical history, daily activities and goals. I’ll also ask about bladder and bowel habits, pregnancy or surgical history, exercise, pain and any other concerns that may be relevant.
Your physical assessment may include:
Posture and movement
Breathing patterns
Core muscle coordination
Hip and back mobility
Strength and balance
Pelvic floor muscle function
An internal pelvic floor examination may provide helpful information in some situations, but it is never required. It is only considered with your full understanding and consent.
I explain each step before we proceed, and you remain in control throughout the entire appointment.
Pelvic Floor Therapy Is More Than Kegels
Many people assume pelvic floor therapy means being told to do more Kegels. But Kegels are not appropriate for everyone.
Some people have pelvic floor muscles that are weak. Others have muscles that are tight, overactive or unable to relax properly. In some cases, the muscles are strong but don’t coordinate well with breathing, pressure or movement.
Performing more strengthening exercises without understanding what your body needs can sometimes make symptoms worse.
Your treatment may include:
Pelvic floor strengthening or relaxation
Breathing and pressure-management strategies
Core and hip strengthening
Bladder retraining
Constipation and toileting strategies
Mobility exercises
Manual therapy
Education about daily habits and symptom triggers
Guidance for returning to exercise or intimacy
The goal is not simply to give you exercises. It is to help you understand your body and feel confident managing your symptoms.
Do I Need a Referral?
Many Illinois patients can begin physical therapy without first obtaining a physician referral. However, individual insurance plans may have their own requirements.
The Healthy Pelvis is in-network with BCBS PPO plans. Before beginning care, we can help you understand your benefits and determine whether additional documentation may be needed.
For other insurance plans, a superbill may be available for you to submit for possible out-of-network
